Retro Inspired Personal Computer – A 1950s Styled Design Concept

The Philco PC

The ’50s are back and making its way into the design of everyday gadgetry. If you are a fan of Apple’s personal computers I bet you will dig this concept for a home computer. The “Philco PC” takes its inspiration from the 1954 design classic Philco Predicta, as well as an eclectic mixture of modern minimalism, the steampunk movement, and antiques.

Sadly this is still just a concept and the images you see are 3D rendered, but Shultze Works who are the creator of this little time piece, hope that a electronics company will pick it up and start to manufacture it in a near future. What do you think? Would you like to have the “Philco PC” in your mid century inspired designer home and how much would you pay for it?

I wish someone would pick up the design and run with it, even if it were just the case, monitor, and keyboard. Then I could build a machine to suit me.
It certainly has the right look to hook retro-nuts like me.
Might be the only time a computer catalog would offer something in “aqua, coral, or salmon”

Hell yes I'd have that computer!!

I think it should be “the 50s ARE back…” but nice post, anyway. That would look good with a '55 Chevrolet in the “Salmon Pink and Grey color scheme.

  • Whoops, I always mess is and are up. Corrected, thanks for the heads up.

  • Wow, really amazing design! Retro-inspired gadgets are really my thing, and this style of a computer is way too much of what I’m expecting to see! Plus, orange is my favorite color, so this set would likely fit into my preferences. The keyboard, the monitor, the mouse and all are just magnificently marvelous! I’d like to own one of this and put it in my room, with a “Do not touch!” sign. I wish my pc looked like this.

  • Yes I would totally buy this!!!!!!

I love the concept! Taking the retro-fit ideas from the Steampunk movement & using them in a mid-century modern way. I would love to see the idea catch on & more products of this type created. Perhaps this might be the genesis of a new movement, ‘Googiepunk’. One thing did strike me as odd, and that was it is shown as a Windows computer. I would expect it to be an Apple computer, given their design sense.

Love it, except it would have to be a Mac. And cloth-covered wiring would be cool too.

  • RichLather

I’d rather buy this as a case and fill it with my own components.

good luck on finding anyplace manufacturing those keys.
For better steampunk inspired design it should have brass rather than chrome and oak or fine leather instead of orange metal case

not necessarily. “the 50s” can be considered the be short for “the decade of the 50’s” so “is” would be correct. It’s like “data”, “My data” is correct.(understood as “My set of data” is correct.) or My data are correct which just sounds wrong to most English speakers unless they took Latin.
