There is a great documentary about the Salton Sea narrated by John Waters. A really, weird, surreal trip.

http://www.saltonseadoc.com/

The North Shore Yacht Club at the Salton Sea is moving steadily toward reclamation and renovation, but sadly the motel across the street where the pool shot was taken is long abandoned and because it is not architecturally significant is slated for demolition. The last owner bought it for just under a million dollars about 20 years ago when it was still a functioning motel. Vandals have destroyed a lot of the structure and arson has even been attempted. Because the Salton Sea is not a desirable tourist destination, there is hardly any reason to renovate it. That said, I would love to own it if only to fence it off, remodel one wing of it to be a house and to demolish the rest. Even if I had the financial resources for such a folly, it would be a money pit. It saddens me to know that it will be bulldozed because I also like ghost towns.

Chris, thank you for mentioning my blog.

If anyone is interested in joining the fight to fix the Salton Sea, please email me at leeprewett@hotmail.com

I wonder how much money it would take to buy some of these old places and fix them up. It's a shame to see them just sit there and waste away.
