Thinking of You (1954)

Music As promised here is my first of (hopefully) many more vinyl shares. First up is a real classic by Les Baxter. Found it on a auction site here in Sweden for about $6 – what a bargain! Although this isn’t a exotica record per se, it is still very recognizable if you have heard Les Baxter’s work before. Most of the songs on it are loungy and soft – perfect for a rainy night in front of the fire place. 01) Thinking of You 02) Speak Low 03) Because of You 04) With my Eyes Wide Open I’m Dreaming 05) I Love Paris 06) Miss You 07) Nevertheless 08) Lost in Meditation 09) Mine 10) ( continue reading... )

The Cocktail Nation - Queens Of Vintage

Episode 266    May 12th 2013

This week we talk to the publisher of an online magazine called Queens Of Vintage, her name is Lena Weber and recently she interviewed me in her kings of vintage portion of the website so I thought we should have her on to talk vintage culture and the English scene. Plus the best exotica and lounge music from across the globe.

Stores Shopping in Luleå in the northern parts of Sweden was the first indoor shopping mall in Europe. Built in 1955 and designed by the famous architect Ralph Erskine, who wanted to create a mall for people to enjoy and socialize – even with the cold winter climate of northern Sweden. Apparently he got the idea while visiting a outdoor shopping mall in Canada, during the winter. Shopping had a very modern and futuristic look, often referred to as “Nybrutalism“. Raw, naked concrete pillars, walkways, and catwalks connecting the different levels created this rather characteristic look. At the top of the ( continue reading... )

Roadtrip Trams are a thing of the past. Nowadays, they have been replaced by buses, subways or cars. Sweden have had its share of trams. I can name at least five major cities that had them. Stockholm was one of them, but the Stockholm transport authority decided to remove them when Sweden switched from left side, to right side traffic in 1967. The cost of replacing ( read more... )

Architecture I recently discovered a Swedish website that featured abandoned and disused places, buildings and what not. One of the locations was one of those old motel / restaurant / bar establishment thingies that was a common sight along the Swedish highways up to the 1980s. The interesting thing about this place is the design. It looks like nothing I have seen before, at least not ( read more... )

Film I have a keen movie interest and therefore I would like to recommend some lush movies I have seen recently. Most of them are what most people would refer to as “oldies”, but I think some of the best movies was made in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. If you are expecting to see masterpieces by famous directors, you are wrong. I watch movies that ( read more... )

Stores Time for another visit to yesteryears shopping malls in Sweden, this time focusing on a gem located in the suburbs of Gothenburg in the southwest parts of Sweden. The Frölunda Torg mall was built in 1966 and was by its completion the biggest mall in Europe. It took seven years and 80 million Swedish Krona (approx. $100 000 000) to complete it. In 1974, another ( read more... )
