Space Age Lounge Volume 2 – Red Carpet Ride

Since many of you have requested my previous two volumes of “Space Age Lounge”, I have decided to share them with you here. First off is volume 2, which is called Red Carpet Ride. It is a tribute to the swank Hollywood premieres and jet set lifestyle of the 1960s. The music is mostly soft and easy going with lots of strings, vibes and flutes. The compilation features (as always) 24 lush tracks and clocks in at about 60 minutes. Enjoy and be sure to comment if you like it!

More Jet Age photos

Here are some more swank retro air travel photos. Just look at the cool interiors and colors of those Boeing 707′s and 747′s! That groovy stewardess in pink looks like she is from outer space or something. All you need now is some lush jet set airplane music to play in the background (hint). That’s right, keep an eye open for more custom made compilations on this site very soon.

Ultra Swank – Your one stop blog for retro living, style and design

Ultra Swank takes you back in time into the kitsch, chic and swank living of the 50s, 60s and the 70s. We mainly focus on the design, architecture and the lifestyle of the happy-go-lucky and space-age-living mentality of that era – but also on the music and movies that takes you back to happier times. Ultra Swank is run by Chris, a Swede born in the wrong decade that currently resides in Barcelona. Read more

Jet Age photos

So far we have stayed on the ground, exploring the past. Now it’s time to take to the skies and go back 40 years or so when air travel was considered a privilege and the first travel choice for any international jet set person. My personal airline favorites are Pan Am and Braniff, seeing I really like the Pan Am logo and the cool airplane paint schemes Braniff used. In fact I really love the whole Braniff concept with their colors, design, clothes, air strip and what not. On with the photos, look how neat and cozy everything was back in the late 1960s, early 1970s. That was back in the days, when you could get free layovers if you scored with one of the stewardesses. Oh, well… Sadly, both airlines had problems during the strikes and high oil prices in the late 1970s which ultimately lead to their decline and downfall. (Via) (Via)

Helsingborg in the 1960s

I got a e-mail today from Lasse who has been a frequent visitor to my blog and really likes the postcards and music I post here. So he was nice enough to supply me with three scanned postcards from Helsingborg from the 1960s to help continue my Swedish 1960s marathon.

Helsingborg was a major boat hub to Denmark until the Öresund Bridge was completed in 2000. There is still a ferry line to Denmark – but the charm of taking the old kitschy DSB ferries from the old Helsingborg F station to Helsingør is now a thing of the past. Thank you again, Lasse. Be sure to stop by his recordshop if you are into old records.

Halmstad in the 1960s

Looks like I am stuck in the 60s. I found some nice photos of how Halmstad looked back then. Halmstad is located on the southern westcoast of Sweden and is famous for its beaches, golf courses and tourists during the summers.

Malmö in the 1960s

I have decided to continue posting old postcards from Malmö. Here are four more which depicts how the central parts of Malmö looked in the 1960s, notice how vibrant everything looks and feels. I lived there myself for almost two years between 2002 and 2004, can’t really say I appreciate the changes the city went through in the 1990s. It feels very different from what I remember from the 1980s when I was a kid.

Shopping Spree – Part 4

Time again to visit the yesteryear’s shopping experience. Here are some fresh assorted postcards from two different shopping centers in Sweden, one from Stockholm and the other one from Gothenburg. I have only visited the latter a couple of times, and it is still there – but it looks slightly different today (as many other things from the past). Enjoy Keith!
