While the rest of the Sterling Cooper staff attends a Kentucky Derby party thrown by Roger Sterling and new wife Jane, Peggy and the other writers are stuck in the office to brainstorm ideas for the Bacardi campaign. Bacardi is looking for five vacation situations for their overall concept “Daiquiri Beach.”
Peggy and the boys sip on Bacardi for inspiration but find none. Copywriter Paul snits, “We’re supposed to sit here and pretend we’re on vacation?” Peggy and Smitty try wordplay with portmanteaus like “Bacardi-licious” and “Bacardi-Eisenhower.” After some deliberation and experimentation with non-alcoholic substances, Peggy begins developing an idea that we often see in today’s beer and cocktail campaigns—the idea that alcohol can whisk us away to some exotic paradise without ever leaving home. Visualizing a hammock set up on a city rooftop, Peggy turns Paul’s negativity into a positive selling point.

Pour yourself a drink and make yourself comfortable for your introduction to the silken-voiced Mr. Koop Kooper. This swank gentleman is the host of the Cocktail Nation – a lounge and exotica podcast out of the Sydney penthouse. Each week Kooper talks to the movers and shakers of the lounge and Tiki scene and plays the very best in swingin’ tunes. He is also a DJ, writer and voice-over artist, known around Sydney town as a hepster – who is always on the lookout for some crazy music.
Ultra Swank was recently featured in the world-of-swank segment on episode 149 (55 minutes into the show), where Kooper gives some thoughts about Ultra Swank and what you can read about here. There was a mistake on the address though, which Kooper said he would correct on the next podcast. If you want to tune in, head over to Cocktail Nation and download the free podcasts.
Ultra Swank – Your one stop blog for retro living, style and design
Ultra Swank takes you back in time into the kitsch, chic and swank living of the 50s, 60s and the 70s. We mainly focus on the design, architecture and the lifestyle of the happy-go-lucky and space-age-living mentality of that era – but also on the music and movies that takes you back to happier times. Karminsky Experience Inc. is best known for creating middle eastern influenced Electronica music. But his more recent album, Snapshot (2007), has a radical retro lounge theme. While listening to Snapshot, a mixture of library, beach, and jazz music transforms into wonderful melodies. The album begins with Summer Song, which is happy and inviting – it creates images of beach summer fun! Into The Blue has a slow intriguing tune, creating a sense of spy-like secrecy. Yet it has a calm and soothing feeling great for Sunday rainy days. A couple other songs to sample include Rossetta Drive and Camera On. Snapshot is the perfect album for your next ultra-swank cocktail party.
Mad Men’s own January Jones presents a few helpful tips that every housewife should know before throwing the perfect cocktail party back in the 1950s. Funny spoof from the Saturday Night Live team. [Thanks Cam]

Halloween is coming up and to give you some ideas for your costume, contributor Cam presents a couple of retro themed suggestions. All you need is to pick your favorite classic movie character and you are almost set to go! Some possibilities for the ladies could be the eternal style icon Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the sensual Jane Fonda in Barbarella or the fun and wishful Barbara Eden in I Dream Of Jeannie. For the gents, why not put on your best suit and dress up as classy Sean Connery as James Bond, the frightful Boris Karloff as Frankenstein or the original jungle man Johnny Weissmüller as Tarzan.
Don’t forget the ravishing Halloween cocktails as well, like Witch’s Brew, Vampiro or Italian Fruit Punch. To top it all off add some spooky “Monster Melodies” courtesy of Frankie Stein and his Ghouls. Who will you dress up as?
