At the top of the World

This house, located in Santiago, Chile was designed by native architect Mathias Klotz Germain and was built for a family with eleven (yes eleven!) daughters. The first floor houses entertainment and social areas, the second floor all of the bedrooms and the top floor includes the kitchen, viewing area and the master bedroom. The base of the construction is made up with concrete and steel and decorated with wood and glass.

It reminds me of the Scandinavian modernism in the 50s and 60s in a way with its raw concrete walls and floor-to-ceiling glass windows – and the view is of course amazing! All that’s missing is a few cocktails and some Space Age Lounge music and you are set for quick weekend getaway – anyone else feeling like going with me? (Via)

Mies van Der Rohe likes Barcelona

Famous architect Mies van Der Rohe was not only a architect – but also a designer. He designed among others the Barcelona and Brno series furniture. Today we are looking at some of his designs from the wonderful Barcelona series. Designed in 1929 for the German pavilion at the Barcelona exposition in Barcelona, Spain. I was fortunate to visit it when I was in Barcelona in December 2007 and I must say that it is quite the thing – a timepiece that always will remain modern. (Via)

Ultra Swank – Your one stop blog for retro living, style and design

Ultra Swank takes you back in time into the kitsch, chic and swank living of the 50s, 60s and the 70s. We mainly focus on the design, architecture and the lifestyle of the happy-go-lucky and space-age-living mentality of that era – but also on the music and movies that takes you back to happier times. Ultra Swank is run by Chris, a Swede born in the wrong decade that currently resides in Barcelona. Read more

Mies van der Rohe

I have a passion for amazing architecture and special types of buildings. Hard to describe the feeling you get when looking at something beautiful, it is like a gut feeling and it feels pleasant. I have been thinking for quite some time now of getting some posts up of favorite architects from the golden days of architecture, thank you janepeepshow for your inspiration! First off is Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, usually just referred to as Mies van der Rohe.

All American Taschen Books

I’m a big fan of Taschen’s books. So far I have purchased their two advertising books from the 1950s and 1960s. The 50s book is the newer edition with only some 350 pages, the first edition had over 900 pages, but it seams that it is out of print now. I was lucky to find the 60s book at the swank department store Harrods in London last year. If you are into Googie design or just like the colorful, simple, but yet elegant designs of that period, be sure to get the advertising series from Taschen.
