The photos were taken by film director, musician, journalist and photographer Gordon Parks who is mostly known for directing the 1971 blaxploitation movie Shaft starring Richard Roundtree.

Many people have no clue that he was also a acclaimed photographer that started his career by doing photo essays for Life Magazine who had noticed his photos of a young Harlem gang leader in back in 1948 and offered Parks a job with them, where he stayed for 20 years.
